The 5 Best Camping Chairs for Big & Tall People

As a 6ft7 outdoors enthusiast I know just how frustrating it can be when your camping equipment doesn’t suit your larger/longer frame.

Previously I’ve covered tall-person friendly tents and sleeping bags.

This time it’s the camping chair.

Whether you’re wanting to sit down and enjoy your kids football game, hiking in the wilderness, or simply enjoy some marshmellows around the campfire with friends – a comfortable, purpose built, camping chair can make all the difference!

So what makes a good outdoor camping chair for a giant like yourself?

I’ve broken it down in to the following criteria:

  • Comfort
  • Features
  • Size/weight
  • Price

Let’s get to it.

5. ALPS Mountaineering King Kong Camp Chair

The ALPS Mountaineering King Kong is a powerhouse camping chair, just like the fictional beast it’s named after – King Kong. It has a strong construction that can support literally any body weight, and a seat height that’s optimal for longer legs.

Key Features

  • Fold-type
  • 600D polyester fabric
  • Powder-coated steel frame
  • Dimension: 30in x 20in x 38in
  • Seat height: 18 inches
  • Weight: 12.5 pounds
  • Weight capacity: 800 pounds
  • Adjustable armrests
  • 2 cupholders, a carry bag, and 3 pockets

What I Like About This Product

As said earlier, this is one beast of a camping chair. If you’re a big guy, you would be surprised at how well it would hold up under your weight. Many users weighing over 400 pounds used the chair without it even squeaking.

It’s not only great for big guys but also tall guys. The seat height is 18 inches, and that’s tall enough for almost any person, even if you’re 6”8.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

The chair sits low in the back, which consequently puts pressure on the legs after a long period of sitting. However, you can fix this if you like by reinforcing the back leg with a pool noodle or wood.

Pros

  • Rock-solid construction
  • Accommodates larger individuals
  • Durable fabric
  • Extra storage pockets and cupholders
  • Adjustable armrests

Cons

  • Heavy to carry around
  • Sits a bit low in the back

Takeaway

If you are a large guy or intend to sit for long hours at a picnic or camp trip, the King Kong camping chair is a perfect choice.

4. Coleman Big-N-Tall Quad Chair

The Coleman Big-N-Tall is, well, a great chair for big and tall guys. It’s a durable and reliable camping chair that’s easy to use, equipped with user-friendly features, and a massive weight capacity.

Key Features

  • Fold-type
  • Dimension: 37in x 24in x 38in
  • Seat height: 19in
  • Weight: 9.9 pounds
  • Weight capacity: 600 pounds
  • Seat drain system
  • Includes 2 cupholders, carry bag, pockets

What I Like About This Product

The Coleman Big-N-Tall is sturdy. A large-sized guy will feel safe in it without the fear of it breaking.

Tall and lanky users also get to enjoy this camping chair. The seat is 19 inches tall and the 24 inches wide across, which prevents numbing of the underside of the knees. However, bigger guys may still experience this general issue after seating for long periods. s. Nonetheless, bigger guys may still have the same issue after sitting for a long period.

For its value, getting this seat is a hard bargain.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

Many customers find it embarrassing to use the carry bag with Big-N-Tall labeled boldly on it.

Pros

  • Great value
  • Sturdy
  • Eliminates pain behind the knees for lanky guys

Cons

Heavy

  • Carry bag is boldly plastered – Big-N-Tall

Takeaway

The Coleman Big-N-Tall is another great choice for burly tall guys. If you normally feel that a camp chair would break under your weight, put your mind at ease with this camp chair.

3. GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker Chair – Best Rocking Camp Chair for Tall People

If you used to think you’d never feel safe using a rocker chair chair as a tall person, you may need to have a rethink.  The GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker chair is designed with tall guys in mind and has a patented Spring-Action and Eazy-Fold technology for more functionality.

Key Features

  • Folding rocking chair
  • Powder-coated steel
  • Dimension: 24in x 25in x 34.8in
  • Seat height: 19.7in
  • Weighs 12 pounds
  • Weight capacity: 250 pounds
  • Includes carry bag and cupholder

What I Like About This Product

The Freestyle Rocker has a solid construction. Despite having a weight capacity of only 250 pounds, larger folks used this chair without any issues. It feels like it could support as much as 300 pounds, but its best to stick to the specification.

Also, the Eazy-fold technology makes it easy to carry around, well, if you overlook its overwhelming weight.

Finally, the Spring-Action rocking feature is top-notch. It delivers smooth rocking action even on rough or uneven surfaces with its flat base. The high-quality shock absorber allows for a soft rocking motion, but the range comes up a little short.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

The back of the chair is too upright, at least for a rocking chair. It would have been more comfortable if there was room to slouch in the chair a bit while rocking.

Also, the padded armrests come up short. As if that’s not enough, they slide to the back of the chair. So you are left with bare steel, or to adjust the armrests to fit all the time.

Pros

  • Durable
  • Easy folding and transport
  • Stable and easy rocking motion
  • Great for lanky guys
  • Works on rough grounds unlike regular rocking chairs

Cons

  • Seat is too upright
  • Short armrests
  • Flimsy cupholder

Takeaway

The GCI Outdoor Freestyle Rocker is a strong rocking chair that’s great for use on even rough surfaces. It’s the perfect one for you if you don’t mind its upright back position.

2. Timber Ridge High Back Camping Chair

Another wonderful camping chair that caters to the worries of tall guys is the Timber Ridge High Back chair. It is all its name suggests but also sturdy and super-comfortable.

Key Features

  • Fold-type
  • Polyester fabric
  • Weight: 13 pounds
  • Dimensions: 5in x 23in x 38.5in
  • Seat height: 16in
  • Swivel cupholder
  • Carry bag

What I Like About This Product

This seat lives up to its name with a high 22 inches back. That’s a great addition for tall guys with a longer torso than their legs. The seat is only 16 inches off the ground, but it still works well enough.

If you’re bothered about getting up because of the seat height, it has exceptionally strong side rails and armrests for support.

All of these, coupled with its light padding, makes it very comfortable for tall guys. This foam padding is crafted ingeniously to avoid hindering the folding mechanism.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

Compared to its closest competitors, it is very heavy. It’s just as heavy as the King Kong camp chair, if not more. However, this is probably as a result of its strong armrests and padded foam material.

Actually, it is the reason. So, keep in mind that you’ll be sacrificing portability for extra comfort.

Pros

  • Comfortable
  • Ergonomic back and armrests
  • Works for tall guys with long torsos
  • Large carry bag

Cons

Heavy

Inconspicuous cupholder

Takeaway

If you have a long torso or prefer to have a chair that envelopes your back, this is the best high back camping chair for you.

  • Dimension: 28.4in x 37.7in x 40in
  • Weight capacity: 400 pounds
  • 2 cup holders and carry bag

What I Like About This Product

The Dual Lock locking mechanism is simple but very useful. It adds extra security with a push on the arms by preventing the seat from folding up on you. It still locks in place even after folding it up for carriage.

The design and fabric of this chair are awesome. I’ve always preferred mesh back chairs for their breathability as I hate the slimy feeling of sweat in my back after sitting for long.

For the tall dudes, this chair is nothing short of amazing. Its oversized seat is 20 inches off the ground –much taller than regular camping chairs – which makes it suitable for longer legs. This, coupled with its ripstop fabric that doesn’t sag much, makes getting up a breeze.

What I Don’t Like About This Product

Pros

  • Exceptionally tall seat height for tall guys
  • Good bang for the buck
  • Breathable mesh back
  • Suitable for big guys
  • Handy locking mechanism
  • Has strap for carrying without a bag
